Posted on June 24, 2013 at 3:35 PM

The 2013 Northern Ireland Memorial Show traditionally launches the show season in Northern Ireland and we can report that the 2013 show season got of to a wonderful start.Quality birds and increased entries were the order of the day.The Memorial Show was this year hosted by the County Down Club whose members were commended by NI Chairman for their efforts on staging and hosting a very successful day.

For the spectators there were some top class birds on show and it is clear that the standard of birds being shown in Northern Ireland has most definitely risen over the last three years.

Budgerigars

This year Best in Show went to David Boyd's young 2013 top quality Spangle. This bird oozed quality and defeated all comers to clinch this most prestigious accolade. This is the second Best in Show award this young bird has won within the last seven days.David also clinched Best Opposite Sex in Show with a superb Pied Hen which on another day could quite easily take top honours.

Veteran Exhibitor ,Norman Anderson of the Antrim Club ,mounted a very impressive challenge enjoying a very successful day taking Second Best Budgerigar in Show as well as numerous other awards.Norman is a legend in showing circles and has over many decades secured many top awards.

Sammy Adams distinguished exhibitor and panel judge showed a lovely barhead to secure the prize for Best Unmoulted in Show.Sammy ,another County Antrim member is a real gentleman and a great ambassador for the Northern Ireland fancy.

Novice Breeder Robert McLaughlin who is Press Officer for the NIBZF&FBS produced some lovely Any Age birds to clean up the Novice Section in style. The Novice Section looks to be one of the most competitive and we watch with interest as to who the ultimate 2013 winner will be.Paul Edgar current President of the County Down Club is the dark horse of the race with many quality birds and is expected to mount a serious challenge once the show season moves up a gear in August.

The Beginner Section turned out to be a decisive victory for County Down member Big John Smallwood.John produced quality bird after quality bird to sweep the boards taking every award open to the beginner section.A very nice home bred Cinnamon Grey Cock headed up his show team and it was smiles all round when eventually the results were announced.John is passionate about the hobby and the high quality standard of turn out he exhibited is a credit to his commitment.

Well known Ballymoney exhibitors W McChesney and Son enjoyed a reasonably successful day with both Foreign Birds and Budgerigars. This father and son team secured the award for the Best Team of Budgerigars on display.

Our thanks goes to the two Budgerigar Judges Mr Martin McCann and Mr Les Harkin both of whom judged with the utmost integrity.

All in all this was a very 'good humoured' and successful show enjoyed by exhibitors and spectators alike. We trust that this chord of harmony will mark the show season in Northern Ireland and that the impressive start enjoyed today may continue to strengthen and grow.

Lastly a word of thanks to those who undertook the administration of the show namely the Show Secretary Cedric Armstrong and his faithful team of assistants ,not forgetting the Show Managers ,Mr Michael Young and Mr P McCann.

County Down Celebrate Successful Night

Posted on June 3, 2013 at 2:10 PM

The newly revamped County Down Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Club held a very successful show on 28.5.13. It was all change at the County Down with new officers and members in attendance. Members have commissioned a new website and are eagerly waiting for the site to go live sometime in June 13

Well known local breeder and personality Ronnie McAuley judged the Budgerigars whilst NIBF@FBS General Secretary Adrian Sheils judged the foreign entry. With over fifty Budgerigars and twenty foreign birds on display the evening was greatly enjoyed by the club members. There was a high of standard of quality birds on display. Novice breeder and exhibitor, Robert McLaughlin produced a very nice top quality Yellow Faced Blue Cock who did well on the night. This cock was impressive and if he continues to progress will certainly be in the running for major honours this season.

Likewise John Smallwood produced a number of stunning birds namely a Yellow Spangle Cock which was awarded Best Beginner Breeder and a DNB1 Grey Green Cock that went on to win Best Beginner Any Age.

Best in Show

Best in Show went to David Boyd's home bred Cinnamon Grey Cock, last years Young Bird winner at the Northern Ireland Premier Show. The big surprise of the evening was another top quality bird produced by the Chestnut Hill Stud - a young Green and Yellow Spangle Cock which the judge on the evening described as "outstanding". This young Spangle went on to win Best Breeder in Show.

In what many have described as one of the most difficult years ever in relation to breeding it was encouraging to see quality young birds being shown.

Tribute was paid to Ballymoney exhibitor Willie McChesney for his unstinting support of the County Down Club Show over many years.

Willie ended the evening winning Best Champion Breeder and Best Foreign Exhibit in Show.

Thanks was also paid to John Knipe, the only exhibitor from the Republic of Ireland - John was given a very warm welcome on this his first night as a member of the club.

Ronnie McAuley ended the evening with a very helpful talk on his long association with the hobby.Members really appreciated the talk and some who were discouraged by a bad breeding season left the hall greatly encouraged.

Newly elected President Paul Edgar presented the prizes and thanked everyone for making the Club Show such an enjoyable and successful night

John Smallwood, Press Officer, County Down
